Pathways

Classic – 1 Year

  • Aspiring principal with full or nearly full release time from other duties works with a mentor principal in the same building for a 12-month residency.
  • Most aspiring principals have full-time release from their duties. If the aspiring principal does not have full-time release from their current job duties, all the following criteria must be met:
    • Aspiring principals cannot be in direct service to students for more than 25% of the time in the residency.

RIRAPP – 1 Year

The RI Registered Apprenticeship Principal pathway (RIRAPP) allows aspiring leaders to complete the PRN program as an apprentice while serving in the role of assistant principal.

  • Aspiring Principals in the RIRAPP complete their residency while serving in the role of assistant principal.
  • Aspiring principals in this pathway must be mentored by the building principal of the school where the AP is serving as an assistant principal.
  • In order to enroll in this pathway, the aspiring principal must have support from their LEA in the form of a signed RIRAPP MOU.
  • Aspiring principals in this pathway must also sign a participant agreement that includes a fully-forgivable loan agreement for the tuition

Leader of Record – 2 Years

  • Classroom teachers or other qualified educators to participate in a part-time residency for their first year, and complete the PRN program in their second year by serving as a school leader.
  • An aspiring principal in the Leader of Record pathway experience a residency in their first year that is similar to the Extended Time pathway (work with mentor before school, during preparation periods, after school and during the summer).
  • An aspiring principal needs approximately 35 days of release time from the classroom to fulfill all residency requirements, and meet proficiency in the RI leadership standards

Extended Time – 2 Years

  • The Extended Time (ET) pathway allows classroom teachers to participate in the PRN while teaching over a two-year part-time residency.
  • Aspiring principals work with a mentor principal before school, during preparation time, and after school over two years. An AP also works for at least four weeks each summer with their mentor principal to prepare the school for fall opening.
  • The AP needs approximately 30 days of release time from the classroom each year to attend all meetings, fulfill all residency requirements, and meet proficiency in the RI leadership standards.
